How to Choose a Spouse in Islam: 7 Qualities the Sunnah Teaches Us

By the Sharia Connect Team · · 6 min read

Choosing a spouse is one of the biggest decisions of your life. It will shape your home, your children, your peace of mind and, most importantly, your relationship with Allah. So what should a Muslim look for in a husband or wife? The Prophet ﷺ gave us clear guidance — and it is very different from what the world usually tells us.

The hadith every Muslim should know

“A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her lineage, her beauty and her religion. Choose the one with religion, may your hands be rubbed with dust (i.e. may you prosper).” Sahih al-Bukhari 5090, Sahih Muslim 1466

Wealth, family status and beauty are not forbidden to consider — they are natural. But the Prophet ﷺ taught us to make deen the deciding factor. The same advice applies to choosing a husband:

“If someone whose religion and character you are pleased with comes to you (with a proposal), then marry him. If you do not, there will be fitnah in the land and great corruption.” Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 1084

Based on these teachings, here are seven qualities to look for in a righteous spouse.

7 qualities to look for in a spouse

1. Sincere faith (deen)

Does this person pray their five daily prayers? Do they fear Allah when no one is watching? A spouse who is conscious of Allah will treat you well even on difficult days, because they know they will answer to Him. “Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you” (Al-Hujurat 49:13).

2. Good character (akhlaq)

The Prophet ﷺ paired religion with character for a reason. Someone can appear religious yet be harsh, arrogant or dishonest. He ﷺ said: “The most complete of the believers in faith are those with the best character, and the best of you are those who are best to their wives” (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 1162). Watch how a person speaks to their parents, siblings, and people who can do nothing for them.

3. Kindness and mercy

Marriage is built on mawaddah and rahmah — affection and mercy (Ar-Rum 30:21). Look for someone who is gentle, forgiving and patient, not someone who is quick to anger or holds grudges.

4. Honesty and trustworthiness

A marriage cannot stand on lies. Be wary of anyone who hides their past, their marital status, their finances or their family situation. Honesty in the search is the first sign of honesty in the marriage.

5. Responsibility

For a husband, this means being able and willing to provide and protect. For a wife, it means being ready to care for a home and a family. For both, it means keeping promises, managing money wisely, and taking the commitment of nikah seriously — Allah calls it “a firm covenant” (An-Nisa 4:21).

6. Compatibility

Scholars discuss kafa’ah (suitability) between spouses. Shared values matter: how you practise the deen, your goals for the future, where you want to live, your views on education, work and raising children. Compatibility does not mean being identical — it means you can build a life together without constant conflict.

7. Mutual attraction

Islam does not ask you to ignore attraction. When a companion was about to propose, the Prophet ﷺ told him: “Go and look at her, for that is more likely to create lasting love between you” (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 1087). This viewing should happen in a halal way, with modesty and family present.

Practical halal steps to find your spouse

  1. Make your intention sincere. Seek marriage to please Allah, protect your faith and build a righteous family.
  2. Involve your family and wali early. They know you, they can ask the right questions, and they protect you. Learn more about the role of the wali.
  3. Ask meaningful questions. Talk about salah, family expectations, finances, children, where you will live and how you handle disagreements.
  4. Avoid khalwah. Do not meet alone in private. Keep conversations purposeful, respectful and supervised.
  5. Pray Salat al-Istikharah. The Prophet ﷺ taught his companions to seek Allah’s guidance in every important matter (Sahih al-Bukhari 1162).
  6. Seek advice (istisharah). Consult trusted people who know the person or their family.
  7. Do not delay without reason. When you find someone with good deen and character, and your family agrees, keep the nikah simple and easy.

Frequently asked questions

Is it wrong to want a beautiful or wealthy spouse?

No. These are natural preferences. The guidance is about priority: let religion and character come first, and let the other qualities be a blessing on top — not the foundation.

Can I use a marriage app or website in Islam?

Many scholars permit it, as long as Islamic etiquette is kept: honest profiles, modest photos, no private flirting, and family involvement before any commitment. The tool is not the problem — how it is used is what matters.
